► (n. 1943) Político británico. En 1990 sucedió a Margaret H. Thatcher al frente del Partido Conservador y como primer ministro. Fue derrotado en las elecciones de 1997 por el laborista Tony Blair y dimitió como líder del Partido Conservador.

Político y primer ministro británico (1990–97). Fue elegido a la Cámara de los Comunes como miembro del Partido Conservador en 1979 y ascendió rápidamente en la estructura partidaria. En 1989 la primera ministra Margaret Thatcher lo nombró secretario de asuntos exteriores y luego canciller del Exchequer (ministro de hacienda). Después de la renuncia de Thatcher como primera ministra y como líder del partido en 1990, Major pasó a encabezar el partido y en 1992 llevó a los conservadores a la victoria en las elecciones generales. Sus primeros años en el cargo coincidieron con una larga recesión económica (1990–93). Su gobierno se hizo crecientemente impopular y él mismo fue percibido como un líder anodino e indeciso. En 1997 los conservadores perdieron en forma aplastante ante el Partido Laborista y fue sucedido como primer ministro por Tony Blair.
